Daniel Ellsberg (born April 7, 1931) is a former United States military analyst who, while employed by the RAND Corporation, precipitated a national political controversy in 1971 when he released the Pentagon Papers, a top-secret Pentagon study of U.S. government decision-making in relation to the Vietnam War, to The New York Times and other newspapers. He was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 2006. He is also known for a fundamental contribution to decision theory, the Ellsberg paradox.

Between 2004 to 2006, he commanded the 2nd Brigade, 75th Division (TSB) and deployed a second time to Iraq to serve as an advisor to the Iraqi Special Police Commando Division.  Upon his return, he served as the Director of Operations for U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas until November of 2007.

From 2007 through 2009, he served as Deputy Commanding General for the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, NY, including a deployment to Iraq as the Multi-National Division-South.  Following an assignment as the G-3/5/7 for the United States Army Reserve Command, he returned to Iraq as the Director of Strategic Effects (J9), U.S. Forces Iraq, from July 2010 to December 2011.  Major General Buchanan most recently served as the Deputy Commanding General, I Corps, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
